1. Leave the car park of the hotel and turn right. You will find a junction where you will need to turn left. We recommend that you proceed with caution up this road, as it is two-way traffic. 2. You should arrive at a second junction, where you turn left. 3. A few metres from here, you will find another junction with traffic lights. Once again, you should turn left and go down the hill. 4. At the start of your decent, you should see the restaurant “A Morgadinha” on your left hand side. A few metres below this, you will find a set of traffic lights with a zebra crossing. Once past these lights, take the first road to the right. 5. Continue downhill for a few metres until you reach a junction. Approach this junction with care, as it is probable that you will meet a good deal of traffic. Turn right at this junction. 6. You are now heading downhill to the city centre of Funchal. After a few metres, you will come to a roundabout where you should take the second exit. 7. After the roundabout, continue downhill. After a few metres you will reach a tunnel. 8. At the tunnel exit you will come to another roundabout. Go ¾ of the way round the roundabout and take the exit along the sea front with 2 lanes. You are now in the heart of Funchal! Directions Airport – Hotel Quintinha de São João 1. Exit the airport onto the Via Rapida towards Funchal/Câmara de Lobos/Ribeira Brava. Your lights must be on at all times when using this road. 2. After passing exit 10, move into the left hand lane. This is because exit 9 is a little unusual, having one slip road to the left and one to the right. You need the left. 3. Leave at exit 9 from the left hand lane, signposted to the Hospital. 4. Follow the exit road all the way downhill to a roundabout where you should note the mileage/kilometerage reading on your vehicle’s odometer. Distances quoted later will all be relative to this datum. It is not far to the hotel and these figures will help you. 5. Take the 3rd exit from the roundabout. After 0.4km, *note* the "A Morgadinha" restaurant on the left hand side. There is a small road just before it that you will be turning into a little later. Driving laws do not allow you to cross a solid white line down the middle of the road, so the following instructions will help you to do the necessary 180 degree turn safely. 6. Carry on down the hill and through a tunnel. On leaving the tunnel, immediately get into the left lane. After 1.4 km from the datum you will see a tattoo studio on the far side of a roundabout type road junction. Stay in the left through lane (not the one for the car park) and use the roundabout to reverse your direction of travel, following signs to the hospital so that you re-enter the tunnel in the opposite direction (Northbound). You need to be particularly alert here because there are several pedestrian crossings and traffic lights to be negotiated in this vicinity. You should be 1.7km from the datum when you re-enter the tunnel. 7. Stay in the right hand lane, pass the ´Hotel Four Views Baia´ and be ready to take the next right after 2.6km from the datum. The Quintinha Sao Joao is 25m along this road on the right hand side. Parking is available beneath the hotel, the access road sloping down to the right immediately after the hotel main entrance.  |
